Honorable Mention Bird Woman M. Kathryn Black I tie the skulls of larger birds to my fence. They are my guardians. I gather bones on the beach; wind and sand bleach them white. I make fans out of feathers, give them wood handles, a bead strung on silken cords. "But don't pretend you can fly. These are no substitutes for wings." The wind plays through hollow eyes like plaintive flutes. Sometimes my whole fence sings. Snow falls softly. I put out seed and suet on poles no squirrel can climb. My sheltered yard is full of chattering; husks litter the ground. On clear days I put on my woolens, wander down to the shore and scavenge for waiting spirits.
